House placed at 3576.12 feet above sea level, surrounded by forest, in the middle of the Ports' Massif Natural Park. The refuge, built in 1968 on top of an old country house, has a controlled camping ground and a playing area where formerly crops were grown. The Caro Refuge is a property of the Unió Excursionista de Catalunya (UEC), and is run by the refuge's guards, Pere and Helena.
In the ground floor we can find a big living/dining room with an open kitchen, a bar and the refuge's kitchen. Heating with fireplace and wood heater. In the first floor, recently remodeled, we can find the bedrooms, with a total of 50 beds distributed among five bedrooms with bunk beds, and bathrooms with showers.
In an attached building there's the open refuge and the camping ground services. The Caro Refuge management is integrated into the expected rules of the Ports' Natural Park and promotes activities and measures of ecological management.
The refuge is placed 100 m from the main road and the access is through a path. We can also access on foot, through the GR 7 Large Walk Track. The path comes from Tortosa and the Delta de l'Ebre, goes through The Natural Park and the Hunting National Reserve of the Tortosa and Beseit Ports to Tinença de Benifassà, in the Baix Maestrat, and in the Matarranya region.
It also has a private parking beside the refuge.
